Green Zebra

Picture
Indeterminate) 86 days. [Developed in 1985 by heirloom tomato breeder Tom Wagner of Tater Mater Seeds.] 'Green Zebra' is an unusual tomato. Fruits are  ripe when the lighter green stripes turn  to yellow-gold with alternating dark-green zebra-like stripes. Flesh is an emerald color and of good flavor. This is a tomato that you will either  love or hate, has a nice tangy flavor and is great when served with a variety of other tomatoes. Vines are well branched, provide good foliage cover, and have some resistance to septoria leaf spot. Fruits are slightly elongated globes, some slightly ridged at the shoulder and average approximately 3 oz

Sungold

Picture
Very sweet, bright orange cherry tomatoes. taste is not just sugary but also fruity and delicious. Vigorous grower, these tall plants bear long clusters of fruit. Hands down my most popular and best tasting cherry, its only flaw is it is a hybrid. But I will still grow it.

:Marglobe

Picture
70 days. (Determinate) [A select strain of the old favorite 'Marglobe' originally released by the USDA in 1925. 'Marglobe' was first developed in 1917 from a cross between 'Marvel' and 'Globe'.] 'Marglobe' has been in demand for several generations while many other varieties have come and gone. This selection has been improved for disease resistance. Fruits are red, medium-sized, 5 to 8 oz. with firm walls and good flavor. Plants are stocky, vigorous, and have excellent disease tolerance. Vine growth is uniform and provides good protection from sun scald.

Tennessee Britches

Picture
This tomato was a pleasant surprise. I recieved the seed in a trade and was intrigued by the name. I believe Craig Lehoullier of raleigh NC first recieved the seed from the original grower in Tennesssee. My experience is very large tomatoes tend to be watery and lack somewhat in flavor. This tomato is an exception and  easily produces 2-3lb juicy fruits with a nice sweet flavor. One tomato fills a quart jar.

Lenny and Gracies Yellow

Large dusky rose/purple fruit with rich, sweet flavor and good yields. Most Brandy wines do not produce well for me here in the piedmont of SC. But this one  and Craig Lehoulliers "Brandywine OTV "both do very well here in Little Mountain. This is another one that I like to take June cuttings of for a fall crop. Picture from Google pics can't find it anymore to get or give proper credit. To be replaced when I remember to take a picture

Mortgage Lifter

Picture
79 days (Indeterminate) [Developed by M.C. Byles in the 1930's and released to SESE as an exclusive variety in 1985 with all rights reserved. A legendary tomato always in demand in the Mid-Atlantic states. The following history is based on portions of our 1985 taped interview with M.C. Byles who developed this tomato in the early 1930's while in Logan, WV. Mr Byles is affectionately known as "Radiator Charlie". He earned that nickname from the radiator repair business he opened at the foot of a steep hill on which trucks would often overheat. Radiator Charlie had no formal education or plant breeding experience, yet he created this legendary tomato by cross-breeding four of the largest-fruited tomatoes he could find: 'German Johnson', 'Beefsteak', an Italian variety, and an English variety. One of the four varieties was planted in the middle of a circle. Then, using a baby's ear syringe, he cross-pollinated the center plant with pollen from the circle of tomatoes. Next year he selected the best seedlings: he planted the best seedings in the center and the rest in a circle around it. The pollination and selection process was repeated six more years until he had a stable variety. After Charlie developed and named this large tasty tomato, he sold plants for $1.00 each (in the 1940's) and paid off the $6000 mortgage on his house in 6 years. Each spring, gardeners drove as far as 200 miles to buy Charlie's seedling tomatoes.] Fruits of 'Mortgage Lifter' can average 2-1/2lbs and may reach 4 lbs when well grown. Plants are very productive, disease resistant, and continue to bear until frost. These large, slightly flattened, pink-red tomatoes are meaty and flavorful with few seeds.

Mule Team

Picture
86 days.  Heirloom from Joe Bratka. Seed provided to SESE by Dr. Carolyn Male. Aptly named workhorse of a tomato.  'Mule Team' is notable for its uniform red fruit, weighing 8 to 12 oz., on vines that bear continuously until frost. The fruit is sweet with a slight amount of tang. Does well in the heat and humidity of the South Carolina Peidmont.

Amana Orange

Picture
Heirloom Beefsteak; light-orange fruit; can be 2 lbs; mildly sweet, very pleasant, almost tropical fruit in flavors. My top orange fleshed along with Kellogs Breakfast

Goose Creek

Picture
I finally got to grow this tomato in 2010 after reading about it for years. Originated in Goose Creek, South Carolina from a family that descended from slaves and have grown it since the middle 1800s. Heat tolerant to say the least, with 2010 the hottest year on record a single plant with two stems trained and tied to a stake produced nearly 30lbs of fruit up to frost . An all purpose mid size tomato 6-8oz. slight acidic but has some sweetness great for slicing or canning, this one needs to be in  every garden. My new favorite. Seed from my good friend Darryl Jones of Selected Plants. www.selectedplants.com

HOG HEART

Abe Hall

Picture
This colorful tomato has an equally colorful story.  According to Fred Hutchinson, this family heirloom comes from his ancestor, Abe Hall. It seems that Abe was riding the roof of his house down the Ohio river, during one of its periodic floods. He saw a tomato floating by and had the presence of mind to scoop it up, and later save the seeds. The fruit is in the one pound range, is red, and has a bit of an acid bite - it will bite you back if you're not careful

Purple Dog Creek

Picture
If they gave out blue ribbons for taste alone, this tomato would be sure to win. It won in our own taste contest - sweet, yes, but a complex blend of sweet tastes all mixed up. Hard to describe! We might call it pink, but in times past this tomato color was called purple. They weigh up to one pound, and produced right through the drought. This is the history according to tomato guru Gary Millwood: "Family heirloom from the tiny community of Dog Creek near Munfordville, in Hart County, Kentucky. A picnic supper was given to a Martinsburg, West Virginia minister and members of his church who went to do home improvements for the low income elderly people in that area. These tomatoes were served and were so good, the man who grew them went home and returned with seed he shared with the minister; he in turn shared them with others.

Dwarf Summertime Gold

Picture
Summertime Gold is one of the 9 new dwarf tomato varieties released in 2011 by the Dwarf Tomato Project. The large 8-14oz. yellow beefsteaks are very sweet, although, for me the plants were not quite as early or prolific as her sister’s, Dwarf Mr. Snow. The compact 4 foot plants are a good choice for small gardens or patio growing. As with all of the new dwarfs, the plants need to be staked

Dwarf Sweet Sue

Picture
Dwarf Sweet Sue is a product of the Dwarf Tomato Project, originating in the Sneezy family (Golden Dwarf Champion X Green Giant, cross made by Patrina in 2005). The tomato originated as a selection of Summertime Gold 3 (which was selected and named by David Lockwood), found and named by Craig in 2007 after his wife, Susan (who loved the tomato and is very sweet!) Dwarf Sweet Sue is an indeterminate potato leaf Dwarf that will reach from 4-5 feet tall by the end of the growing season, and produced variably shaped (oblate to round), smooth, bright yellow fruit in the 5-10 ounce range, that take on a pronounced pink blossom end blush when very ripe. The fruit have a well balanced, full, delicious flavor with particularly sweet overtones. Dwarf Sweet Sue seems to be quite disease tolerant and one of the more prolific of the new Dwarf varieties.

Tasmanian Devil

Picture
Tasmanian Chocolate is one of the 9 new dwarf tomato varieties released in 2011 by the Dwarf Tomato Project. This new introduction was one of the most compact (3’9″ tall) and heaviest producers of the new dwarf releases. The flavor, when allowed to fully develop, was good, . This is a good selection for a container, small garden, or for growing in a climate where fruit set is a challenge.

Dwarf Wild Fred

Picture
Dwarf Wild Fred is one of the 9 new dwarf tomato varieties released in 2011 by the Dwarf Tomato Project. The compact plants are just under 4 feet tall and are very good producers of purple/black, medium-to-large, beefsteak tomatoes. I tasted a ‘Dwarf Wild Fred’ in November that was as good as any purple tomato I’ve grown. Especially recommended for small gardens or for growing in 5-gallon (or larger) containers as patio tomatoes. As with all of the new dwarf varieties, this compact tomato will require staking to support the fruit

Dwarf Rosella Purple

Picture
Rosella Purple is one of the 9 new dwarf tomato varieties released in 2011 by the Dwarf Tomato Project. Fully ripe fruit from Rosella Purple can rival the flavor of any purple heirloom/OP tomato I’ve tasted. This was one of my top 3 favorite varieties from the new dwarf releases. At 3 feet, this was also the shortest variety of the new dwarf releases. It is easy to grow in containers (I used 5 gallon buckets) but still needs to be staked because it will be top heavy when loaded with fruit. A very nice tomato!

Dwarf Perth Pride

Picture
Perth Pride is one of the four 2011 (2012 growing season) releases by the Dwarf Tomato Project. Strong growing plants and delicious 3-5 oz. purple tomatoes
History: Developed in the 2006-2011 by the members of the Dwarf Tomato Project from a cross between New Big Dwarf and Paul Robeson, made in 2006 by Patrina Nuske Small in Australia and named Happy. This tomato was selected and named by Tessa Millesse who lives in Perth, Western Australia

Black Tom

Picture
This is an unknown Black tomato simply called Black Tom. I am not sure I like the name but. Most black tomatoes succumb to the heat of Aug. This one is an exception much longer lived and good disease resistance. Tomatoes are Striped with green/mahogony and are deep red inside. Taste is exceptional which is why I like the Black tomatoes best. Med size fruit a good slicer. Seed came from Gary Millwood of Louisville Kentucky. Another one that I grow every year.

Uncle Mark Bagby

Picture
Kentucky Heirloom; Very large pink; mildly sweet flavor; Slightly flattened.  These seeds were given to me by Georgia Emond of Glendale Kentucky, a seed saver and grower,  during the first seed swap and gathering held  in Berea Kentucky. I will always remember Georgia because of a derby pie she brought to the seed swap. Like that pie this tomato also brings back memories of what a good tomato should tast like.
