In 1998 while seaching for old Tea roses on the internet I came across a garden discussion forum on Tomatoes. I read a post about a Black Tomato and I had to find some seeds. That was a pivotal time in my gardening career. Since then I have grown some of the finest tasting tomatoes I could ever imagine. But not because of my abilities but because of the efforts and dedication of the gardeners whose names are remembered in the tomatoes they cherished, names like Granny Cantrel, Kelloggs Breakfast or Grandfather Ashlock. So if you are interested in tomatoes that taste like tomatoes and are willing to have higher standards and accept what some people call flaws then check out my plant list. I sell plants every April in Columbia South Carolina at the Midlands Plant and Flower show and in Florence at the Pee Dee Plant and flower show. My plants are also sold by some of the best plant Nurseries around, Woodleys Garden center in Columbia and Irmo, Nursery Caroliniana in Aiken and Cousins Agri center in Newberry. I have a deep commitment to sustainable agriculture and the enviroment so all of my plants, seeds and produce are certified organic. Please take the time to look over my growing tips and feel free to comment.
Organic Seed Production
Several years ago I started doing preservation growouts for private seed banks. It was a way for me to try new varieties of Heirloom vegetables and return fresh seed to the seed banks. It was at the annual get together of the Appalachian Heirloom Seed Conservancy that I meet Ira Wallace manager of Southern Exposure Seeds in Mineral Va.We talked and I decided to send her some seeds of Stone Mountain watermelon to sell and also to Baker Creek seeds. I now produce melon seeds for Baker Creek in Mansfield Mo. www.rareseeds.com , Cucumbers for Fedco seeds in Me. www.fedcoseeds.com various things for Mike Watson at Heavenly seeds in Anderson SC www.heavenlyseed.net and Numerous varieties of vegetables and flowers for Southern Exposure Seeds in Mineral Va. www.southernexposure.com Growing for seed companies has been very rewarding for me. It helps pay for my garden habit and fulfills a desire I have to preserve older varieties for others to enjoy. Please take the time to check out their websites.
